Hi Val,
Thanks for asking. We did have a nice relaxing time in St. Simons Island, Georgia. The reason we went there was for a family wedding. Otherwise we never heard of this place. We would not go there too.
The weather, right now, is more like Southern California, in the 70s F. But about a month or 2 later, it will be hot and humid. The bugs will come out too(nats, deer flies, and mosquitoes). Fortunately, we don't have bugs in SoCal. :-)
We had a nice hotel within a walking distance from the pier and the beach. The ocean there is different. The tide time table is very important to look at if you want to walk on the beach. At high tide, there is no beach since the water goes up to the rim. At low tide, there is a beach you can walk on and play. I am not used to that since we always have a beach in Socal.
One thing, we had a problem is the food. A HUGE problem, actually. It is impossible to be vegans. It is hard to be a vegetarian. The restaurants in that area serve seafood and soul (southern) food mostly. The idea of a house salad is iceberg lettuce+tomato+italian dressing. Other than that they added fried chicken or chopped steak on top. The idea of a veggie sandwich is 2 toasts + alfafa sprouts + sliced tomatoes + italian dressings(we didn't want mayonaise on it). We ate a lot of french fries with it. At one time, I ordered potato skins from the appetizer menu with no bacon and no sour cream(because that was the only item in the restaurant menu that is probable). It came out slathered with melted cheddar cheese so I scrapped the cheese as much as I can and ate it with ketchup with a house salad on the side.
In the restaurant, the vegetables in southern cooking are cooked with a lot of butter. The greens vegetables like collard green or kale and beans (black eye peas) are cooked with ham hock. We had fried green tomatoes and fried okra and had to ask if they use eggs, they apparently do not. The restaurant menu has vegetables section that listed all kind of vegetables we can order but we have to ask about ham hock, eggs, milk, or butter, if used. There is a funny thing about their Vegetable Section of their menu, macaroni and cheese, cheesy grits, and broccoli rice casserole (with milk and cheese) are listed under Vegetable Section. I guess they meant Side Dishes. :-)
At the wedding we ate fruit, juice punch, mix nuts, and raw vegetables.
We headed directly to Soup Plantation once we arrived at LAX yesterday and had a huge plate of salad with fresh veggies. :-)

Debbie, you remember my friend Fireweed? Well, she and her boyfriend just got back from visiting her parents in Florida and they had the same problem! ---------- "To look like a goddess, eat like a peasant." Karen Andres

Yes, I know Fireweed. Hhmm, it looks like we have to avoid the southeastern states. It is not that I didn't prepare at all. I searched a few internet sites that have vegetarian/vegan travel info and could not find any vegetarian/vegan establishments. I thought maybe the restaurants could be veg friendly but they are not. I brought some trail mixes and dried edamame for snacks.

Oh Debbie, how awful that sounds!! I think even in PA I was able to get better vegetarian food (and I used to complain about it ever since we moved to CA - how awful the vegetarian / vegan selection was in PA, but it sounds like your visit to St. Simons Island, Georgia was even worse than that!! I am sorry to hear that.
Were you guys set up for light cooking in your hotel room ? Just curious about whether they would have let you do that (although it would be nice not to have to cook too much while on vacation though!!) :)
Well, good thing you're back in good ole' SoCal and have access to great vegan food here (and with no bugs around either) :) yay!!
Good to have you back! ---------- Val
