Hello! Just wanted to tell everyone about a great "vegetarian lamb meat" I had from 99 Ranch market in Anaheim. I don't know if any of you have tried it, but if you're looking for something meaty, this one works great in a stew, grilled or even curried!! I got a couple packages (they're really small packages from the tofu section) and they're really, really good. I grilled some and put it into a vegetable stew, and that was really good (even John really liked it!) and the next day I made some roti paratha (Indian flat bread) with a "lamb curry" and potato and peas masala, and everything came out really well (the curry was really good with the vegetarian lamb). If anyone wants any of these recipes, just let me know and I will post them.
Have a great weekend!
Val
P.S. The "meat" is made from mushroom stems

Ooh, sounds awesome, Val, thanks! You know, I think that may be similar to *the* best shredded vegan "roast beef" (commercial) I've ever tried. It was about 4 years ago...I found it only twice at an Asian market and then never again! :( :( It was made of mushrooms as well! That must be the secret :). Isearched high and low for it, believe me; but never saw it again. The texture was absolutely amazing. It was also very low-or-fatfree. What's the fat in the "lamb"?
Strange how vegan versions are sometimes better than the animals: I never cared for cow meat too much; but like it vegan! It may be the same with that vegan "lamb." I hated lamb as an omni :).

I think I had something like that from West Best Vegetarian in Vancouver once-- I'm going in April and I'll look for it again! ---------- "To look like a goddess, eat like a peasant." Karen Andres

Bryanna & Linda, I hate to say this but I didn't check the package for the fat content per serving. I think the total fat was about 19 % (I know that's high, but I figured it's just once in a while!!) :) If you're looking to splurge on something totally tasty, it's worth it.
I think it was about $2.99 for the package. It did expand when cooked, so that was nice. We got about 4 servings out of the one small package.
You know, in Malaysia there's a meat substitute that's vegan and SO tasty. It's a soy product and a little like TVP but seasoned, and you buy it according to which type of meat you want to cook (i.e. they have it labeled chicken, pork, fish, beef, etc) and it's all vegan. I'll look it up the next time I'm there (December this year) and see if I can get the name of the manufacturer, or distributor, heck I might just import it myself!! :) My cousins from Tennessee were visiting the last time I was in Malaysia, and they had some of this "meat" and none of them knew it was vegetarian!! They truly thought they were eating chicken and beef!
I totally agree with you, Linda re: not liking a certain type of meat as an omni but being able to eat something that tastes like it now. I never really liked beef , pork or lamb, however I LOVE the meat substitutes that are flavored similar to those. Isn't that strange ?? Yup the vegan versions are A LOT better!!

Hi Val,
What's the brand of the vegetarian lamb? I might look for it.

Hi Debbie,
The brand is "Kimbo". It's in a plastic wrapper with a green label. It was in the tofu aisle (right at the end), pretty close to the fresh noodles and stuff like that.
I hope you like it!

I couldn't resist your recommendation, Val! I went to the 99 Ranch Market in Van Nuys where I did find the "lamb" meat substitute. Have you tried any of the other faux products that 99 Ranch sells? I bought fresh shiitake mushrooms for under $3 a pound! Yay!
Could you please post the recipes you used? They sound delicious.
Thanks!
PS -- I was so impatient to try this item that I stir-fried it for lunch. It's awesome! I love the deep mushroomy flavor (I'm a worshipper of all mushrooms) and the texture is astonishing.
Yes, it's a bit high in fat, but too excessively, and I think a package serves four easily, maybe even more.
This "lamb" would be amazingly perfect for an Irish stew. I know my recently vegetarian SO will be blown away if I serve it for St. Patrick's Day. Can anybody recommend a good Irish Stew recipe?
