In a March 2008 review, Cook's Illustrated magazine said the winner was OXO Good Grips V-Blade Mandoline Slicer: "Razor-sharp V-shaped blade is ideal for both firm and delicate produce. Plus, it feels safe and comfortable." "Razor-sharp V-blade made short work of a variety of fruits and vegetables, with a wide, sturdy gripper guard that felt exceptionally safe. Extra blades conveniently stored beneath the frame. Measurement-marked dial sets slice thickness." $49.99 (same price as the Joyce Chen, but the Joyce Chen didn't get as many stars)
Their "best Buy" was Kyocera Adjustable Ceramic Mandoline Slicer: "Half the price of our winner, the Kyocera was razor-sharp, adjusted easily, and fit in a drawer. It didn’t come with julienne or waffle blades, however."
"It looks like a toy, but it works like crazy!" exclaimed one tester, who pledged to go out immediately and buy one. No julienne or waffle blades, but this slicer is razor-sharp, adjusts easily, and fits in a drawer. Plus the price is right." $26.99
