One more slow cooker question

Hi,

I have a $30 USD gift certificate to Amazon.com. I want to use it towards a purchase of a slow cooker.

On epinions.com the Hamilton Beach 33675 Meal Maker 7-Quart Slow Cooker has over 50 reviews plus and a 5 star rating. However it only has a one star rating at Amazon. However I can get it for under $50.

The Cuisinart 650 C has was given 4 stars on epinion and 3 stars on amazon.com and I can get it for under $100.

I basically want a slow cooker to make some of the seitans in the newsletter. I have a PC which I really like and use those for bean cooking/ soup making.

I am leaning towards the Hamilton Beach, but is it too large for the seitan recipes? Also I am not sure who to trust, epinions or amazon.com for the reviews.

Of course there is also the rival, but I think I want a slow cooker over a crockpot.
Thanks!

What's a PC?

I just bought a 7 quart slow cooker and it's huge -- good for huge batches of soup or cooked beans. I haven't tried making seitan in it because my older slow cooker (a 4 or 5 quart) is plenty big enough for them. I don't actually know whether the 7 quart is *too* big in the sense that the seitan won't work or will turn out worse.

Edit: Also, there are no written reviews on Amazon, so I wouldn't take the 1* rating too seriously. I always want to know why someone didn't like something to see if it applies to me.

PC is a pressure cooker, right? At least, that's the first ting that came to mind.

The 5-6 qt. is plenty big for a seitan pot roast. But you can do it in a larger one-- just make a flatter roast.

The bigger one is good for cutlets. Actually, I use the ceramic insert of my old square electric skillet for making cutlets, because it is wide and shallow. I don't think they make those ceramic inserts anymore.

Okay I see...

PC = pressure cooker .. .sorry got acronym happy :)

So would a 4 quart slow cooker be amble to make the cutlets then? If that is the case, then that is what I will do

Well, the wider and shallower the better, for cutlets.

Bryanna,

Can I cook your "pork" and "chicken"-style cutlets (made with tofu) in the slow cooker? I've only done them in the oven, but will the slow cooker work too?

I don't do them in the slow cooker because they are quick-cooking and they have to soak up pretty much all of the broth. I do the tapioca ones in the slow-cooker.

HI! I cook my seitans in a slow cooker alot. I actually have a really cheap one. CHeap = clearanced for $5 three years ago, but I have seen then in a discount store for $14'ish recently. It is a 4 quart hamilton beach. I love the oval shape and it seems to be the perfect size to make a nice shape "hunk" of roast.

Here's my blog addy telling about it.

Thanks Dori!

Amazon has them on sale for $20.00 right now.

Have you tried cooking any cutlets in this slow cooker ?

And I guess my second question is: You are able to put the crock in the oven for the other seitans or do you cook it on low for the three hours?

Thanks again!

Lil Lisa,
I do not put the crock in the oven ever. I do have a clay cooker that I use in the oven but never my crock pot, I always use it in the electric base that comes with it. When I make them this way I actually set the crockpot on low and let it go overnight while I am sleeping (about 8 hours). I have made then in the late morning and set it on high to eat at supper times 5-6 hours later.

I haven't tried cutlets in my 4 quart crock, I am not sure it would be big enough once they expand. Here is a picture of cutlets in my clay cooker from my blog entry ....
