I tried 2 Morningstar products that were recommended by readers of Vegnews magazine. They are Morningstar Meal Starter Steak Strips and Morningstar Meal Starter Chick'n Strips. Both are delicious. I like the texture and the taste. I made Teriyaki steak strips and was great.

They are made from Gardein, a product from Canada. Whole Foods in my area started to sell this product in their deli case and they are very expensive.

I have never heard of it until recently although it has been out for a while. This is of course in America only.

Just a FYI. I have been ill lately and didn't have energy to make my own seitan.

This is about Gardein: http://www.gardenprotein.com/

Bryanna, it is close to you.

Sounds fabulous, Debbie! I've written to the company to see if we can get it here. ironically, Morningstar farms products are only available through 7th Day Adventist stores here!

Bryanna,

That's too bad and ironic if they won't sell it retail to you. You will have to come to Richmond, BC and knock on their door to sell you some. :-)

Being ill has it's own blessing since I didn't cook elaborately and tried vegan frozen food and ate out. I made a discovery that the Gardein product (the chick'n style) is also used in the new restaurant near me http://www.veggiegrill.com/ It was funny that I had their dish with chick'n and it tasted the same as Morningstar Chick'n. It's like I am tasting the same product all weekend. I am just speculating this but I believe it was the same chick'n product from Gardein. I just trust my taste judgement on this one. The Gardein chick'n tastes just like a real chicken, unbelievable!

I still like soy curls though but for grilling, I think, Gardein chick'n is better.

We also tried Starlite Vegan Taquitos. http://www.starlitecuisine.com/home.html They are great too!

Just to comment on the Morningstar farms...they make a ground seasoned "pork" crumble product which is also vegan. It's awesome in vegan omelets and anything else you'd use loose (doesn't need to stick together) ground vegan pork sausage in.

I just ate the "steak" strips tonight as Mongolian "Beef". I always keep a bag of crumbles, "chicken" and "steak" in the freezer for those meals I need to make on the fly. I tried the crumbles in my meatloaf recipe...actually worked out ok. I oiled the top a tiny bit and it came out crispy like regular meatloaf.

Bryanna,

In Houston the Seventh Day Adventist store always allowed the public to buy from them. Do they not in Canada - or have you tried? I used to send my students there. It can be a good resource.

Susie Q, we can buy from the 7th Day Adventist store, but it's on the lower mainland near Vancouver and I live up island. I do order Soycurls from them because they are dry. They do have abus that goes around a couple of times a year and sells things-- I'll have to check their schedule.

I did find out that the Gardein cutlets are marketed under the name "It's All Good" in Canada, and I'm still trying to locate a store that carries it!

Native Foods, the vegan restaurant near me, also use Gardein product for their 'Save the Chicken' on their menu now. They use to use the 'Brest' from the on-line healthy-lifestyle.com but they switched recently.

Mother's Market in Costa Mesa, near me, also use this product for their Teriyaki 'Chicken'. Boy, it is so good. I used to love teriyaki chicken when I eat meat. Now it can be done exactly with this product.

Apparently, Gardein has shipped a lot of their product into vegetarian restaurants in my area. I found it everywhere. The ones in the restaurants are shaped like 'chicken breasts'. Unfortunately, they don't do retail for these ones.

Debbie-- I meant to ask-- are you feeling better now? I hope so! we've missed you!

The It's All Good brand seems to have "breasts"--
http://www.itsallgoodfoods.com/

You can see a picture at the above url.

But one is in a "Tuscan Tomato marinade", and one is in a "herb dijon marinade". I wonder if the sauces could be washed off to use in our own recipes?

Gardein told me that they also make the Yves "chicken" and "beef" strips.

Hi Bryanna,

Yes, I am feeling well physically. Mentally, I feel down lately. I don't know, maybe Winter blues. I just don't feel to blog, cook, nor post in the forum lately. I also have stress because of work. Considering what you have been through with power outage etc. I should not feel this way. I should be thankful of what I have (nice weather etc.) but lately I just want to feel sorry for myself and be lazy. I have no excuse right?

You don't need an excuse! It happens to lots of people. And, knowing you, you work very hard and deserve a rest! Sometimes we just need to let everything go for a while and take care of ourselves!

Debbie,

You mentioned winter blues. My daughter was depressed every fall and winter until I read that people may get the winter blues if don't get enough vitamin D (the sunshine vitamin) so she started taking 400 I.U. daily of VegLife Vegan D and this year she has done MUCH better. It was like magic. Also I read from an alternative doctor that a deficiency of vitamin D in winter may contribute to colds and flu at that time of year.

Just wanted to share that with you. Hope you are feeling better soon.

Shirley,

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try it. I look myself in the mirror lately and seems that I look tired all the time. Maybe that's what I need, food supplements. My energy is also low lately. I walk 1/2 hour a day and maybe needs to increase it more but on the other hand I feel tired to walk more so maybe I just need a boost.

Thanks for the suggestion. I am sure I can find that VegLife Vegan in the health food store.

Debbie,

Good luck. Please let me know if it helps you to take supplements. My daughter and I both, have been vegetarian since 1961 and vegan since 1984. We both take VegLife MultiVeg Energy Everyday Multiple Vitamins and Minerals, which contains 400 IU of vitamin D - plus 400 IU VegLife Vegan D for a total of 800 IU of Vitamin D. I like this vegan line of supplements. Some people believe in taking vitamin supplements while some don't, but it sounds as though it would be worth a try for you. It would be interesting to know how many on this forum take vitamins. To me, taking vitamins is like health insurance. I will be 70 years old this year and am super healthy - don't do doctors or pharmaceutical drugs.

Hi Susie,

Thank you for recommending the VegLife vitamins. I bought a bottle from HFS. I like this brand. I am impressed with the packaging and that it is for vegans.

It's too early to tell yet about the result. I am not a vitamin taker so I forget to take it sometimes. But I am beginning to feel that I need to start taking it and learn the habit. Looks like getting older (I will be 47 this year) slows my energy a lot lately. I was walking a lot yesterday at California Adventure amusement park (like about 6-7 hours). This morning I just feel 'dead tired' when I woke up, if you know what I mean. I am not used to be like this. I am going to follow your example with vitamins and supplements. I am not eating must sugary food so I should not be feeling low energy.

Yes, I wonder how many vegans in this forum takes supplements. If you are still energized in that age, vitamins must do something good for you.
