Soy Milk Maker Woes....

Hi,

I have been making soymilk with my SoyQuick. I have made about a dozen batches. I usually make 2 batches when I make soymilk to fill our gallon jug. The first time through, everything is great, all the beans our ground and the milk looks nice and creamy. The problem is with the second batch,-- about 1/4 of the beans do not get ground and the milk is very watery. I clean the mesh filter between batches. This has happend the last three times I have made soy milk - first batch great, second batch - not so great.

Any suggestions?

TIA
Linda

Hmmm...I don't have a soymilk maker, but usually when an appliance does something like this, it is because it needs time to rest/cool down ??

I haven't had this experience myself. The manufacturer says the machine is designed to be able to do 3 consecutive batches.

Have you contacted the manufacturer? You can call Monday to Friday 0 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. PT, toll-free at 1-888-769-5433

You could also contact VickiLynn Haycraft, who reviews many machines, including the SoyQuick. Reach her here:

Brenda W. on this board may have some answers, too.

Lisa, I wish I had something to add, but really don't. I frequently make multiple batches of milk, and have never had this problem. You're not overfilling the stainless steel filter cup are you? The only time I've had beans remain whole is if I do that (and then it's only a few and doesn't affect the quality of the milk). Are you also cleaning the heating elements and temperature sensing probe on the head between batches?

And how are you cleaning the stainless steel filter? I've found the only way I can get this truly clean is thru the dishwasher (or by hand w/ a 5 minutes soak in undiluted Greased Lightening (cleaning product) and then a 5 minute scrub of all its surfaces), so I purchased additional ones to use w/ my consecutive batches .... I clean the head's heating elements, etc, and then put the next batch of beans in a second filter basket.

When I make tofu, I make 3 batches of milk in a row and have had no problems using this method.

Thanks Linda, Brenda and Bryanna..

This is a recent phenomenom. I have been cleaning the filter element by soaking it in scalding hot water and then scrubbing it with my sponge and the cleaning brush that came with the machine. I have not found greased lightning around here yet.

I originally thought I was overfilling the filter at first. So I meticuously measured out the amount of beans and split them in half.

I waited to call to see if any one else has ran into this problem.

Thanks for all of your sugesstions!!

I did call the company last week. I was told the reason that my beans did not grind was due to the filter being clogged. I had neglegted the holes at the bottom of the fiter. He suggested soaking the filter for 15 min in 100% bleach.

I went to the store to buy bleach and lo and behold -- they had Greased Ligtening. (this was a different store than the one I frequent). I soaked the filter in bleach and viola -- sparkly clean.

My next two batches of soymilk came out great. Between batches I used the greased ligtening! Wow that stuff is fabulous!

Now I just need to tweek the flavoring to have the perfect soymilk.

Lil Lisa, have you read my soymilk page (menu to left)? I rub off the skins for a better flavor, and add a little sugar or maple syrup and sodium, since sot milk is lacking in these (dairy contains natural sugars and sodium). I also have an optional recipe using a little rice as well as the soy.

Hi Bryanna,

It was your link that got me started wanting to make soymilk. Before starting, I read your instructions thouroughly. I do rub the beans to get the skins off. I used agave nectar instead of maple syrup and added the salt. I am want it more creamy I guess. Before I made my own, I drank the unsweetend Silk. I have been trying to mimic that. I was toying with the idea of adding the calcium to the soymilk.

I tried the rice version once but it did not come out right. I think I may have done the portions wrong... I think I will try it again for my next batch.

Some people really like the texture of the one with rice in it.
