I have found a source for vegan food colouring (if anyone has experience with this company or knows of a better source, please do let me know!). I'm hoping to use these primarily to tint icing for my kids' birthday cake (they share a birthday, two years apart, and this year will share a cake in the theme of their favourite kids' music group). I'm just a bit overwhelmed by the variety of different colour sources and wonder if anyone has any advice. For instance, am I better advised to use beet or hibiscus for red? Beta carotene or annatto for orange?

The colours I'll actually be using, and hoping to get as "true" as possible, are red, yellow, blue, and purple.

If anyone has experience or thoughts, I'd love to hear. Thanks so much
Krista

(editing to note that not all the colourings at this site are vegan, but those that are are listed as such)

I hadn't hear dof these-- very interesting!

Annatto might be a red-orange, so maybe beta-carotene would be better for orange. Hibiscus might be more of a true red than beet, which has alot of blue in it. You can always mix colors-- add yellow to a pink red for a more true red, for instance.

hi there,
please check for yourself, but according to what i've read, the food colorings from wilton are vegan. they sure aren't natural, but you didn't specifically state that was what you were looking for. if you live near a michael's craft store, they always have the full range of colors.

hope this helps!
