I think I read epazote at your blog, Dori. I could not find it again. I have information overload, I think. Did I see it in your blog or other blog?
I am going to make a lot of beans and I thought that I will try to find this herb as anti-gas agent. ;-)
I was going to find out how to use it in the bean dish. Probably, just add 1 teaspoon while cooking?

Hey Debbie, yes this was me that mentioned it. Above is a link to the post I wrote about it. There is also a link to Penzey's spices there... I use double the amount specified on the Penzey's bag.

Unfortunately, I won't go to Penzey's since the store is 35 miles away. There is a Mexican market about 5 minutes from my house and is on my way home from work. I can get masa harina and other authentic Mexican stuff there. I planned to stop by to get masa harina and hominy. I am sure they will have this herb. I checked Penzey's website and it says 1 Tbsp per 2-qt. pot of chili.

Epazote grows like a weed. I bought a plant at a nursery a few years ago and it reseeds itself every year. I just found the first of this summer's epazote plants in the garden. I always get exited when I see them. I am going to go pick some now to serve with fava beans for lunch. It is a taste that must be developed. I have learned to love its unusual flavor.

Very interesting info Debbie! I have never searched for info on epazote before.
"It's chief use was as an agent to expel intestinal hookworms (wormseed). " I read this and remembered a gal I shared info about epazote to said that she thought she got diarreah from it????? Maybe she did.
I have only used it before in feijouda recipes before. I thnk the other flavorings are so heavy in it I never notice a taste difference.

I would have to look for it to plant it. Would it be good to be planted in a pot?
I didn't notice any different in the taste. But the drunken beans have other spices too that I didn't notice if it was the oregano or the epazote. The beans were so Mexicany that it is as good as Mexican restaurant's beans or maybe better. I will have to test making beans without the epazote first and then add it later.
