My parents are visiting for Christmas and they and my husband are not vegetarians. They are planning on buying a cooked ham for their Christmas dinner so that I don't have to cook it, but I want to make sure they get it from a company that does humane farming, etc (if there's such a thing).
Can you suggest a company they could buy it from (preferably already cooked).
I know this is a vegan forum and I am sorry for posting this here, but I didn't know who else to ask.
Thanks. ---------- Val

I understand, Val, but I honestly don't know. Perhaps you could suggest that they consult an organic organization in their area, or organic farming organization, or even a health food store. ---------- "To look like a goddess, eat like a peasant." Karen Andres

Val, I have this come up on Thanksgiving every year, because although a few of us are vegetarian, the rest are not. So they often will order it from Whole Foods Market already cooked.

Val,
I agree with Julie. Whole Foods market should know. They have free range turkey, chicken, etc. Here is Whole Foods commitment about their Animal Compassion Standards: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/issues/list_animalcompassion.html
The closest Whole Foods to you would be in Torrance or Redondo Beach.
I have the same problem with my family but usually they buy the ham or turkey and have them at their house. We bring our food to their house, be their guests, and eat our own dishes. They know that I prefer not to have ham and turkey at my house.

Thanks Bryanna, Debbie & Julie for your suggestions. I checked out Whole Foods online. I'll ask my husband to get it from there. I now remember reading sometime ago that PETA used to try to get Whole Foods to stop buying duck that was slaughtered inhumanely, and the CEO said that he couldn't give in to everything they asked him to do - that is until he became vegan several years later. He said that he finally sees what they've been telling him for years. I never looked at it this way, but I guess if people "must" still eat meat then it's better to have a place like Whole Foods where they can get meat from animals that were treated humanely while they were alive. ---------- Val
