Stovetop Smoker Experience, anyone?

Hi,

I was just looking into smokers, since Bryanna mentioned that she didn't have one in the Aug/Sep Vegan Feast. I found that there are inexpensive "stovetop" smokers, and was wondering if anyone had tried to use these to smoke tofu?

Thanks,
Elaine
P.S. Sorry if this has been discussed before. I couldn't figure out how to search the forum.

Hi Elaine,

I haven't tried a stove-top one, but I bought an outdoor electric smooker that works really well. I bought it on sale for something like $35.00. The outdoor smokers are usually pretty inexpensive and you can get them at Home Depot.

Yes, the Cameron one was the one I was looking at as well, but I didn't want to "promote" any, so I didn't mention it before.

For people who want more information about this smoker,
There are two available sizes, 11"x15" and 7"x11". The smoker comes with 1oz samples of four different wood chip "flavors": alder, cherry, hickory and oak.

Other related links:
--The manufacturer's website: Camerons, includes information about the two sizes, video, descriptions of all the wood chip flavors, web store
--More reviews are available at cooking.com.
--Another retailer: FamousFoods.com, also sells Cameron wood chips in 1pt (4oz) sizes, smoker/chip prices are discounted from the manufacturer's site
--Some other retailers sell the smoker and 1 pint size wood chips, in packages of 4, at a discount from the regular price on the manufacturer's website

Also, there seems to be a recent cookbook that was created with this smoker in mind Smokin': Recipes for Smoking Ribs, Salmon, Chicken, Mozzarella, and More with Your Stovetop Smoker

How funny...everytime someone mentions a new gadget, I was just thinking of it too! I almost got one last week. I think they are worth it, especially since I have NEVER found smoked tofu in any store! For Bryanna's Blackeyed Pea Chili with Smoked Tofu, I used baked tofu and and added liquid smoke.
I wanted to use the tea-smoked tofu from the last newsletter, but didn't have time.

Yea, I guess I'll be getting a smoker now, lol :D
