Hi, Bryanna!

I luurve quince and I'm seeing a lot of it already this season!
I've always cooked it though, and I'm wondering if I can add it *fresh,* as is, to a smoothie. I'm concerned as to whether it is safe to eat this way. I *think* I read they don't taste too great eaten like an apple, but I'm not sure now...I'm not sure if it just doesn't taste good or whether it was a warning of some kind.
So, taste aside, blended into a smoothie, I'd like to see what happens!

Thanks!

I can't find anything that says quince is harmful when raw, but I found this;

"The quince is a member of the pome fruit family and a relative of the apple and pear; the flavor of quince can best be described as a cross between an apple and a pear. In the raw form, the rind is rough and wooly, and the flesh is hard as a rock. The taste is very astringent. However, in western Asia and the Mediterranean, the fruit is softer and more juicy...

Since the flesh of the raw quince of the United States is hard and dry, it is rarely used in the raw form. Instead, it is cooked, and its flesh becomes softer, sweeter, and turns light pink to purple. " http://www.saucecafe.com/article/5/9/1

So, I would cook it, personally. Here are some recipe collections;

Okay, thanks. Now I wanna taste a sweet one! I wonder if they have any in Asian markets? Next time I go, I'll check; I'd love to try a sweet one.

Thank you for the recipes -- I can never have too many quince recipes! It is so delicious. I've made quince pie (like apple pie), jam, and put it in my cranberry sauce every year.

I found this great article at Vegetarians In Paradise:

Here is says it may be an acquired or learned taste:

"...In the Middle East quince is considered a common food, and, though it is sour, is eaten raw as well as cooked..."

"...the common practice of eating raw quinces in South America and Mexico surprised early explorers who only experienced them as hard and acidic. Humans tend to develop a palate for foods that have become part of their diet from childhood and are less apt to accept foods that are strange looking and have unappealing flavor. ..."

A new sweet variety! I'd love to find these:

"...Most varieties of quince are rock hard and quite sour, though in the 1990's a sweeter variety called the "apple quince" was developed and can be eaten raw..."

Linda, have you ever tried adding ginger to recipes that use quince? I bought some quince and ginger jam when I was in holland last year and it was just delicious.

Hi, kourtney!

Yes, yes! Ginger! I put it in my cranberry sauce. I make it with cranberries, pears, and quince, and I add crystallized ginger -- yuuuuum-E! :)

First time I tasted quince I was floored at how delicious it was. I've never had anything that tasted like it; it's a unique flavor. It was a jar of quince jam in a Middle Eastern foods market. So glad we have so many people from around the world here :)

I've made a quince pie (like an apple pie) and jam. What do you do with it?

Hi, Linda.

I don't really have access to fresh quince, so I've only ever had it in prepared foods.
